FREE LEGAL AID  SERVICE PROVISION
    Introduction

Besides producing competent professionals, University of Gondar, has also engaged in need based community service provision.  One of the most notable community services by the University is the provision of free legal aid service to vulnerable segment of the society.  Accordingly, the School of law of University of Gondar has established 15 centers in two Woredas in South Gondar Zone and in nine Woredas’ of North Gondar administrative zone.  Recently, two additional pilot centers were established only intended to provide the service to women and children in separation from other beneficiaries.  So far the center has provided the service to 27,602 beneficiaries.

The centers has been led by head and vice head as well as staffed with secretaries and legal officers.  Besides, volunteer law instructors are assigned to provide service as well as to supervise students.   In this year, more than 134 senior students are placed in each center.  More emphasis is given to fifth year students who took all most all relevant courses including procedural courses.  It is also intended to accept fifth year students to work their three months’ externship program. The University has been providing the necessary facilities including stationeries, computers, sanitary equipments, renting buildings for office purpose etc.   The School also has given much emphasis for its success.   However, the turmoil in north Gondar has somehow affected the effectiveness of some centers such as high court, koladiba, debark and Gondar prison centers
